Brass Castle Brewery... making Pocklington famous

Brass Castle is a 1bbl nanobrewery; tucked-away on historic Brass Castle Hill in the centre of Pocklington, East Yorkshire.

Owners Phil Saltonstall and Harriet Cross recently returned to their native East Yorkshire from Manhattan Island. Four years drinking in the US convinced them that there was a new surge of interest in craft ales and they determined to get involved once back in the UK. A wave of nanobreweries opening across the US showed that an alternative model to the traditional microbrewery existed for those starting-out in the industry.

Whilst in the US, Phil - a home-brewer for many years - undertook work experience at the Triumph Brewing Company in Princeton, New Jersey. A Brewlab course in Sunderland rounded-out the introduction to brewing cask ale commercially.

Phil is currently a full-time Coastguard, having previously served as a Royal Navy helicopter pilot. Harriet returned from a diplomatic post at the United Nations to work for the University of York. The brewery now fills their spare time and the basement of their house. Small scale operations began at Brass Castle in August 2011 and were soon rewarded with acclaim for the brewery’s Bad Kitty (5.5%) vanilla porter.

Brass Castle currently brews four ales. Cliffhanger (3.8%) is a hop-laden golden ale, brewed in honour of volunteer Coastguard Rescue Teams. A donation is made to the Coastguard Association charity from the sale of each pint. The brewery’s Best Bitter (4.2-4.5%) is designed as a malt-forward beer and crammed with UK hops. Bad Kitty (5.5%) is a reasonably robust multi-layered vanilla-chocolate porter. The newest beer to the range is the brewery’s take on a ‘winter warmer’. Sunshine (5.7%) is a balanced IPA, aiming to showcase the three hop-types involved and bring a little summer warmth into a grey UK winter.

In the early 1900s Pocklington boasted three breweries and associated maltings. That industry dwindled away during the wars. Brass Castle has brought brewing back to the town, initially on a very small scale. Early indications suggest that there may be an appetite for more beer from Pocklington in the future!
